Good Way (For Aunt Helen)

This piece is dedicated to my great Aunt Helen, who passed away as I was writing this song. I was in Spain on a college abroad trip to walk a portion of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage when I got the news that she had passed, already I planned to write something while I was immersed in Spanish and Portuguese music and culture, so I dedicated this to her. The first section is representative of my feelings when I got the news, sad and repetitive as all I could do was think of how I wasn't able to see her. Eventually, this moves into the second section which is a take on tango- inspired in part by Piazzolla as I was playing some of his music at the time. The title is an English translation translation of what pilgrims along the path would say to each other, "Buen Camino!" My performance of my own composition from my Junior recital! Contact me if you're interested in the score.

8 in the Afternoon

The title is set to be an oxymoron of sorts, as neither 8:00 a.m. or p.m. are what would typically be the 'afternoon.' This piece starts off with a modal movement that uses tapping to emulate the feeling of an eclectic work day while maintaining a calm feeling. Ultimately it moves to a sense of relief as projects get completed, yet the music doesn't collapse as it's not tired. In fact it just gets started, and then it realizes it's 8! But it feels like the afternoon.
